Why might this slip of paper be sewn in here?

This was a rare, surviving piece of writing from an earlier draft. Rather than write the lines out again, perhaps Wordsworth decided to sew it in here.

Writing with a quill pen and ink (from a bottle) was more difficult and time-consuming than writing today. If you wrote too quickly, you would be more likely to smudge or to make ink blots on your page.

Today we would cut and paste using a computer, but Wordsworth has had to use scissors and a needle and thread to achieve the same effect.
