William Wordsworth (1770-1850)
ms, verse

Corrected proofs and manuscript additions for William Wordsworth's pamphlet 'Kendal and Windermere Railway. Two Letters Re-printed from the Morning Post'. Mostly in the hand of Edward Quillinan, with some revisions by William Wordsworth and possibly Henry Crabbe Robinson. Includes two letters and four poems. Composed and transcribed between December 1844 and January 1845. Size 192mm x 118mm and 328mm x 204mm (hxw).

Wordsworth initially wrote the letters to the 'Morning Post' in December 1844 in response to criticism he had received for his 'Sonnet on the Projected Kendal and Windermere Railway'. This led to further abuse, so he decided to revise the letter and the sonnet and republish them as a pamphlet for private circulation. This MS. is the corrections and additions for that pamphlet. It includes corrections to printed copies of the letters, 'Sonnet on the Projected Kendal and Windermere Railway' and 'Proud were ye, Mountains, when, in time of old', as well as manuscript additions to the letters, including two further poems. This is addressed to Mssrs. Branthwaite, Printers, Kendal, and postmarked January 1845.
