Wordsworth sat for this portrait in 1817, and was commissioned by Mary Wordsworth’s cousin Thomas Monkhouse. Carruthers depicts Wordsworth with his head bowed into his chest, a pose that is characteristic of later portraits by Pickersgill and Benjamin Robert Haydon. It was the first portrait of Wordsworth to be engraved (by Henry Meyer from the New Monthly Magazine, 1st February 1819) and as such was for many years the best known image of the poet. This was a gift of Joanna Hutchinson in 1966.
