ELIZABETH GREEN (later Mayson)

1799, London – after 1871, Manchester?

The eldest of the many children of William Green, Elizabeth grew up in Ambleside. During her childhood she must have received tuition in drawing from her father and later she helped him in many of his labours; as the eldest daughter of the family it was probably Elizabeth who is referred to by Dorothy Wordsworth in a letter of 2 March 1817 about her niece Dora Wordsworth (1804-47): ‘She learns to draw from one of Mr Green’s daughters and offers very well.’ Elizabeth’s own proficiency in drawing in 1818 may be judged by her dated depiction of Ullswater owned by the Trust (2009.58.19).

A year later, in February 1819, she married Mark Mayson (born 1792, alive in 1861) of Portinscale near Keswick, a member of ancient Cumberland family; it seems unlikely that she continued to give drawing lessons after her marriage. By 1851 the Maysons and their six children were living in Manchester where Elizabeth remained in her latter years. She is recorded in the census of 1851 as a teacher of music. In that of 1871 she is described as a widow and appears to have been living at the home of her son Walter Henry (1835-1905, a celebrated violin-maker and author of books on the violin).
