Montagu, Basil (1770-1851)

Basil Montagu was the son of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich and the singer Martha Ray. Montagu met Wordsworth in 1795 and wrote of their relationship: ‘I consider my having met William Wordsworth the most fortunate event of my life’. William and Dorothy looked after Montagu’s son, Basil, at Racedown and Alfoxden.
