What was noticeable was the kind and caring nature of humanity as a whole resurfacing in the strange times called Lockdown. The bravery of NHS and all key workers; applauded every Thursday night at 8pm throughout the UK. Especially inspiring was the tenacity of 99/100yr old Capt Tom Moore raising nearly £33million.
This near centenarian recovering from a recent hip replacement decided to do 100 laps of his garden path at home as exercise and raise a little bit of money for the NHS (£1,000). Through the media and slots on Michael Ball’s Sunday radio programme, then on Breakfast time and One Show raised a staggering £32plus million. Every news bulletin the amount just kept climbing.
On his 100th birthday (30th April 2020) he was honoured by his former regiment the Duke of Wellington with an honorary Colonelship; and a flyover by a hurricane and spitfire. The Prime Minister Boris Johnson called him a Beacon of Light, and he was given the freedom of London, culminating with the Queen approving the P.M.’s application for a knighthood; he is now Sir Capt. Thomas Moore of Bedford.
To top that off he is now in the Guinness book of records for being the oldest person to have ever been number one in the popular charts for a combined lockdown version of “You will never walk alone” with Michael Ball.
The second franked message is commemorating 75th anniversary of VE Day, which should have been a national celebration in align with the ones of Jubilee years, Grasmere’s nod to the occasion was a bagpiper and drummer playing a lament – VE day the coop had its own tribute to the veterans (video taken by Tom Barnes’phone)
